[Haiti-2] Habitat's Response to Haiti Quake Relief

Donate Now

Damage from the Jan.12 earthquake in Haiti added yet another dimension to the already-crushing humanitarian crisis and poverty conditions faced by the country.

HFH Haiti's national office in Port-au-Prince collapsed (→pic) but the 50 staff survived though some suffered the loss of family and property. Moreover, the 200 houses Habitat has built in or around the capital, only two were destroyed and another two damaged. The remaining houses withstood the earthquake because Habitat built disaster-resistant houses.

Habitat's planned response includes recovery starter kits to help families make immediate repairs and construct temporary shelter; clean-up activities involving local people which may include a "cash for work" component; Habitat Resource Centers to implement the recovery project; and core houses which will be built as and when ground conditions permit.

Due to conditions on the ground, Habitat is unable to send volunteers to Haiti at this time. As soon as conditions are favourable, Habitat will announce volunteer recruitment on its website www.habitat.org. However, it is likely to be months rather than weeks before Habitat will be able to send any significant number of volunteers. Those with an interest to volunteer may wish to respond to the Haiti volunteer interest survey. The survey will collect demographic data, basic skills information, and will sign people up for a periodic email with updates regarding Habitat's response in Haiti.

Amid the tragedy and suffering, Habitat staff member Dominique Rattner is amazed by the Haitians' indomitable spirit. Despite many of their own homes being destroyed, despite the fact that many lost close relatives in the quake, they are ready to roll up their sleeves and go to work. Now, it's time we build together.
