【Sri Lanka-3】Home Owner Selection to House the Refugees
Donate today to support our projects in Sri Lanka!
Mid-June, HFH Japan has launched house building project in Mannar prefecture, Northern Sri Lanka. In 2009 the 25 year old domestic war has ended but left many people as refugees. This project will help these refugees return home and get their lives back started. Habitat Japan is conducting this project in partnership and with financial support from Japan Platform and HFH Sri Lanka.
This project was originally designed for implementation in Jaffna, a prefecture at the Northern end of the island. However the Sri Lankan government released a special order for all developmental works to coordinate with PTF (Presidential Task Force), right before the start date. After series of adjustments and assessments, we have decided to move the location to Mannar, as we came to realize that it was one of the most desperate for HFH's core house construction plan which is permanent and has sustainable projection.
On May 5th, we executed a homeowner selection in a town of Neelasenai where is about 15km away from the Mannar Town, the center of Mannar prefecture. We plan to build 20 houses by the end of June; the staff visited the potential beneficiaries' current homes door to door. We even spent 30 minutes walking across the rice fields on our bare feet to get to some families, but successfully gathered information on the people's living condition during the war and to select the first 20 households.
Now we will proceed on to budgeting and securing the building materials, confirming the detailed plans and logistics, then finally the actual construction follows.
