【JPN Relief-17】Volunteer Stories

Donate to Help Japan Rebuild!

It was very first time for many of Habitat volunteers to visit the disaster hit areas in person. Here are some stories told by these volunteers who worked in Ofunato and Rikuzentakata cities in Iwate Prefecture.

■ Mr. Seiji Sueda
Secondvolunteers_20110607 (3).jpgIt was moving to see young and old volunteers from all over the places around the world. I was also appreciative for the kindness given by the homeowners whose home I cleaned. Though it was such a short stay, I was satisfied with the work I could be involved. I'd like to encourage my co-workers and family to join me staying involved for the long term.

■ Ms. Mayumi Fujita
Secondvolunteers_20110607 (2).jpgI worked to clean the rice fields. When I saw the devastating condition, I couldn't help but crying at first and deeply wanted to help. I found plates and clothes amongst the debris that reminded me of the ordinary lives existed in the near past. It was my first time volunteering for disaster. I learnt a lot from the experience and the stories shared by the team mates, leaving me wonder why I didn't get myself involved earlier.

■ Mr. Ryota Ezaki (University Student)
Secondvolunteers_20110607(1).jpgI got to help clear the furniture out of a local Japanese inn. The homeowner was so strong that she was already moving forward with her life after her house being washed away by the tsunami. Everyone's positive attitude encouraged me to work hard each day. I think that the experience I gained from this trip is a big one for me now and for the future as well. Also, I'd like to share my stories with the members of Kwansei Gakuin Uegahara Habitat, so that we can all plan on how to help with the disaster response work.

Habitat will continue to work with volunteers with a long-term plan for disaster response.
