20120501SriLanka-2.jpgIn March, in Vaddakandal village of Northern Sri Lanka, building of 15 new Habitat's Core Houses was launched and the homeowners were selected. After one month of preparation, construction began in late April. With 86 houses already built in the Mannar district, Habitat Japan is now working towards the milestone of 100 homes completed. In partnership with Japan Platform and Habitat Sri Lanka, this project is offering vital support to all members of the community. This time, it focuses on families, that need immediate support most among the repatriates, such as widowed during the civil war, households with elderly or disabled members.

Future homeowners gathered for orientation (photo, left) to receive consultation on the design of their new homes and the schedule for construction. Today layouts of homes are already fixed and work on the foundations is already underway.

20120501SriLanka-1.jpgMany of the homeowners returned after the civil war to restart their lives, but despite their best efforts remain trapped in temporary shelters or small barracks. Then in January last year, all of Sri Lanka was affected by torrential rain and strong winds. That also caused serious termites damage in the walls and roofs made from palm tree leaves, walls of plastic sheeting that are easily torn down and many homes have no lockable doors; their quality of life was extremely low. With a monthly income of just 2,000-2,500 Sri Lanka rupees (approx. JPY 1,400-1,700), they can hardly afford to even repair their shelters. Habitat's Core House is designed to provide a safety and security needed, but within a modest space, in order to allow people to truly live their lives.
