International Cooperation Seminar
On July 10 2014, Habitat Japan staff gave a talk on international cooperation to 280 freshmen at Tokyo Metropolitan Aoyama High School.
Three years ago, Shibuya Volunteer Center and the High School invited Habitat Japan to participate in this annual seminar; ever since, this has been a rare opportunity not to be missed for Habitat Japan to interact with high school students full of curiosity and energy. This lecture on volunteerism is given during one of their "Social Service Class" hours.
First, staff from Shibuya Volunteer Center talked about what volunteering is and how people can find volunteering opportunities. He then gave examples about helping local elderly, children and disabled citizens, informing students that volunteering is something anyone can participate in.
Then, Habitat staff introduced "why" Habitat for Humanity focuses on the issue of poverty housing along as well as "how" the organization is working to improve the situation. The highlight of the presentation was the section about volunteering abroad; the students learned that the Global Village program not only helps volunteers gain new perspectives, but also is essential for Habitat in creating a sustainable form of assistance for home partners.
Upon learning about the topics that they rarely encounter in their curriculum, many students were seen taking notes and extremely engaged.
It was a precious afternoon for Habitat Japan to be able to inspire high school students.
