Habitat's response to Myanmar cyclone

In cyclone-hit Myanmar, Habitat for Humanity is in the process of establishing an initial partnership with World Concern. This will involve the provision of assistance to 1,000 families and the creation of Habitat resource centers in the worst-affected parts of the Irrawaddy delta.
<img alt="myanmar_cyclone.jpg" src="http://www.habitatjp.org/enblog/myanmar_cyclone.jpg" width="172" height="129" /align=right>

In addition, cyclone-resistant shelters will be constructed, with each acting as a “safe” house for up to 100 people in the event of future storms. Over the planned two-year response, Habitat will cycle construction and program staff through World Concern. A total of nine Habitat staff representing various organizations in the region have been identified for various terms of service in Myanmar. Visas for the initial support team have been secured. Reconstruction efforts are expected to begin later this year given that World Concern and other organizations are still in the relief phase of their response.

To anyone who wishes to donate to support Habitat's response to Myanmar cyclone, Habitat Japan is now speaking out in an effort to gather donations in Japan to join in this recovery effort. Your kind support would be highly appreciated.

HFH on earthquake in China

Habitat for Humanity is launching an initial US$5 million campaign for the first-phase of a long-term and sustained reconstruction effort to rebuild homes and lives following the earthquake in China. Habitat's effort will focus on the worst affected area, Szechuan province.

The first phase will begin with a goal of supporting 1,000 families and investing in the capacity to assist thousands more.

Habitat for Humanity has considerable experience rebuilding after natural disasters, but it is a long-term process. Rebuilding takes many, many years.

Disaster Response: Earthquake in South China

Habitat for Humanity International is responding to this weekend's devastating earthquake in the provinces of Sichuan, Gansu, Chongqing, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou, XiaXi and Hubei in southwestern China.

Habitat has mobilized an assessment team, involving staff from Yunnan and nearby Guangdong provinces to make an initial assessment of the affected area. Habitat for Humanity will offer technical support to local authorities and other non-governmental organizations in support of long-term shelter reconstruction efforts. Habitat for Humanity organizations in Hong Kong and Singapore are among those launching fund raising efforts to support the Habitat response.

Habitat for Humanity has active programs in China and is currently involved in reconstruction programs following snow storms and flooding in Yunnan and Guangdong.

Habitat for Humanity is looking at ways of working with partner organizations in support of long-term shelter reconstruction efforts for those affected by the devastating earthquake in southwestern China. Habitat for Humanity International has been involved with rebuilding efforts following a range of natural disasters in China and elsewhere in Asia and will bring its considerable experience in rebuilding permanent housing following the events in China.

Habitat Japan is now speaking out in an effort to gather donations in Japan to join in this recovery effort. Your kind support would be highly appreciated.

*Volunteers to China*

Volunteers are a vital component of the Habitat ministry. International and domestic volunteer build teams to unaffected areas of China are continuing as scheduled including Global Village teams to popular destinations in Yunnan.

At this stage it is too early to know the need for and placement of volunteers in earthquake-affected areas. The role of volunteers will become clearer once Habitat for Humanity has formulated the nature and extent of its response.

■About India■
India is home to one of the oldest civilizations in the world and is a land as diverse as it is vast. Its population is expected to exceed China’s by 2010, making it the world’s most populous country.

India gained its independence from Great Britain in 1947 and is the world’s largest democracy. Since independence, India’s history has been turbulent. Now in a period of liberalization, India faces the challenge of modernizing while trying to preserve its ancient culture. With an annual per capita income of $300, most Indian families are unable to afford a decent home.

HFH India was formed in 1983 and has built more than 1,000 houses that are approximately 350 square feet, with at least two rooms and a latrine. House designs vary, depending on materials available in the area and the specific needs of the local community.

The 7th meeting of Travelors with a Purpose

On March. 4th, the 7th Habi-bito (Travelors with a Purpose) gathering was held.
The theme was on the Global Village in the urban area. There was an introduction from Ayumi Ota who had participated in the GV in Bangkok, Thailand about the works in Bangkok, and the important points on working in urban areas. In this Habi-bito, there were people who were participating in the GV for the first time, so there was an explanation on the GV and the importance of R&R (Rest & Relaxation).

The poverty issue and poor living environment is not only a serious problem in Bangkok, but also in other cities. Not only in developing countries, but also in the United States or England or Japan, it is an issue. We have explained with pictures of various countries so that everyone can understand about the reason why cities fall into poor housing environment and the mechanism of cities’ particular poverty issues.

Not only with the Habitat GV, but there many opportunities to go to big cities for tour personally. GV is a “Travel with a Purpose”. Therefore, you can see something different from tours when you go to the cities through GV.

The Merits of Urban GV Projects
You can get involved with resolution of the housing shortage issue which is a serious problem in the city area.
You get to understand the particular poverty issues in the urban area.
You can save time and money since it is located in the city area.
It is easier to participate and leave any time you would like to in your limited schedule.
The infrastructures are maintained, so it is easier for people who are concerned about their health problem to participate.

Upcoming Habi-bito (Travelors with a Purpose) Gathering
Please invite your friends with you!
April. 1st, Tuesday from 19:00
At Habitat for Humanity Office (Higashi-Nakano, Tokyo)
** Attention: Not at Pink Cow!
