海外住居建築活動体験レポート

Report From the moment we arrived in Pondicherry, our Habitat Host Affiliate took care of all of our needs and concerns and made everyone feel welcome. Many of us weren't sure what to expect (some of us had prior Habitat or prior Global Village experience, but none in India), but we were given all of the information we needed. Our days at the worksite were intense and rewarding, though many of us felt that we wished that we had been able to do more. The amount that we were able to work was limited by a number of factors, including the heat, illness, a death in the village, etc. We were able to lay foundations for three houses and start brick laying work on one of them, and though we all felt productive, we all wish we could have completed more. The worksite was in close proximity to the homes that are currently in use, so we got to interact with the villagers and families during breaks, and sometimes as we worked. Playing with the children was probably the best experience in terms of feeling like we got to know the families. I think the large number of families at the Vambapet site makes it difficult to establish a one on one feel with any particular family, but the children's friendliness more than made up for that. Our recreation time was also well scheduled. Our meals were always great and we always had more than we could eat. because it was summer we didn:t get to visit any schools, but we did have opportunity to make donations of school supplies to the community. Our accomodations were much nicer than we expected. Some of our members had concerns about security, as there was an incident involving someone's doorknob being rattled in the middle of the night, but it seems likely to have been a guest who was mistaken about their room, and our affiliate as well as the hotel staff took these concerns very seriously, and the issue was resolved quickly. The professionalism and eagerness to make sure we weer comfortable was always a reassurance.
