ハビ人～Travelers with a Purpose～ネーミングに込めた想い
Behind the scenes: naming of "Travelers with a Purpose"
2007年初夏、東中野オフィスにスタッフと元My Habitatメンバーを含むボランティア数名が集まってグローバルビレッジ(GV：海外建築ボランティア)プログラムの内容改善についての話し合いがもたれた。会話は次第に熱をおび、話題はハビタットのブランド性や日本におけるミッションにまで及んだ頃、提案があった。あなたにとってのハビタットをひとことで表現するとしたら？
「家とチームワークを築くことで、自分を変えること」、「自分自身の手で社会を変える方法」、「平和にお金はかからない。ボランティアでひとつずつ笑顔を広めよう。」などさまざまな意見のなかでも「Trips with a Purpose (目的意識のある旅)」という言葉が私のこころに残った。
私がGVを好きな理由のひとつは、その懐の広さ。日本からだけでも、車椅子で参加する学生や孫と同じくらいの年の若者と一緒にがんばるおじいちゃんまで、さまざまな人が世界中に派遣されています。彼らを送り出す作業のなか、私はその敷居の低さから「ボランティアツアー」と意気込むより「旅行しながらボランティア」といった方がしっくりくるのでは、と感じていた。
同じころ、My Habitatでは月一定例の集まりを企画していた。GVを「ボランティア」より「旅」として捉えることで、寄付文化の希薄な日本社会にも受け入れられやすいコンセプトとして訴えるという方法は満場一致の賛同を得た。Travelers with a Purposeという英語を、単なる旅行ではなく目的意識のある旅、またハビタット流の旅をする人と言う意味で「ハビ人(びと)」と訳した。ボランティアは決して特別なことではなく、気軽に参加できる国際協力活動があってもいい。毎月集まる新旧のハビ人たちが互いに打ちとけ語り合う姿をみて、この想いが伝わっていることを実感しています。
Early summer 2007, a few staff and volunteers gathered for a hearing session to better the GV program at Tokyo office. After a while of discussion, the conversation boiled down to mission and branding of Habitat in Japan, and that was when a question arose; how would you describe GV and/or Habitat means to you in one phrase?
One answered “Changing myself through building teamwork and a house,” and another ones said it is “a way to make a different in the world, hands-on,” and “peace is cheap; spread smile one at a time,” and etc. Out of many, the concept of “trips with a purpose” caught my attention.
One reason why I like the GV program is its openness to diversity. Volunteer teams traveling overseas from Japan alone include students on wheelchair to a man of the age of their grandparents to these students. Through assisting those teams, I have realized that the program is more of a “vacation trip with a volunteer activity” rather than up-tight “volunteer/study tour.”
Around the same time, My Habitat members were planning the monthly gathering with the supporters and those interested. They instantly clicked with the notion and standpoint of introducing GV program as a form of travel, rather than volunteering, and decided to gather “travelers with a purpose” to the monthly gatherings. It is translated as “Habi-bito” in Japanese, combining the word for traveler “Tabibito” and Habitat, we believe that there could be a casual and easier way to make a difference in the world. Seeing the attendee motivating one another every months, I am reminded how the seeds we plant are sprouting in people’s minds.
