【JPN Relief-21】 Miyagi : First Volunteer Team in Ishinomaki

Donate to Help Japan Rebuild!

tohokuvolunteer_ishinomaki_20110816(1).jpgOn Aug 6, Habitat Japan launched a new volunteer project in Ishonomaki, Miyagi Prefecture. As it has done to Ofunato and Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, Habitat Japan starts sending teams to Ishinomaki over weekends. In addition, we recruit some volunteers who can stay in the fields for a long term to promote continuous supports for those who in need.

Ishonomaki is the most devastated municipal, where over 3,000 people were killed in the earthquake and tsunamis. Lifeline utilities such as electricity and water are now almost restored and road condition has been improved and there is still a great need of support, so Habitat Japan started mobilizing volunteers to Ishinomaki.

tohokuvolunteer_ishinomaki_20110816(2).jpgThe first team to Ishinomaki is consisted of 12 members from Habitat Japan Campus Chapters and they worked at Onosaki, Ishinomaki to remove debris and muds. Onosaki is in a wide Ishinomaki area, expanding the serious damage of ground subsidence, and the wider area of Onosaki being under the sea. Furniture and clothes absorbing water are more than double in weight and the team strived to carry out debris for only a limited time before high tide.

Habitat will continue to work with volunteers with a long-term plan for disaster response.
