【JPN Relief-30】 10 Months after the Disaster

Donate to Help Japan Rebuild!

OmagariResidence (1).JPGNew year has come after the long severe 2011. On January 11th, 2012, it marked 10 months since the disaster. On this anniversary, even though it is the coldest season of a year, hands of reconstruction work never stop.

In this winter, Habitat Japan distributed heating equipments to affected people in the city of Higashimatsushima,Miyagi. In this area, 20,000 people, which is almost half of this city's population had ended up living in evacuation centers after the disaster. Some of them have already moved to temporary houses, or apartments, but some of them have no choice but to move back to their damaged houses.

UshiamiResidence (2).JPGIn Akai district of Higashimatsushima, the ground floors of most houses were flooded by tsunami. Looking from outside, it seems very calm and peaceful already, as some of the damaged houses are repaired, but there has been a huge struggle and great efforts to come to this stage.

Mr. Yuji Saito 70, who runs a bakery shop in Akai, is one of them. He started cleaning up his house and the store in the summer, and reopened his business in October 2011. Seven truckloads of debris and mud had been swept out from his house and the store. "At the beginning, I had absolutely no idea where to start. But my neighbors and I encouraged each other and managed to keep cleaning and rebuliding."

In Higashimatsubara, after lots of efforts many have repaired their houses and were able to celebrate a new year at their repaired houses just like Mr.Saito. It has been and will be a step-by-step process, but people are moving forward.

Habitat Japan is continuously working with the affected families by providing help and supporting to their urgent needs.
