【JPN Relief-39】 Miyagi : Rehabilitating the Community Center (1)

Donate to Help Japan Rebuild!

20120420_1.jpg Habitat Japan is supporting the rehabilitation of the Kameoka Community Center in Nobiru district, Higashimatsushima city, Miyagi prefecture.

Kameoka Community Center was severely damaged by the tsunami last year. The locals considered to rebuild it from the scratch, but because it was originally constructed by the local volunteers themselves, many wished for its restoration as a symbol of rebuilding this community. Habitat Japan answers to this need and supports the rehabilitation.

On April 14th, 20 employees from Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) volunteered in this work in Tohoku. SCB has been a supporter of Habitat Japan from the beginning, and volunteers helped removing floors boards, walls and roofs to prepare the structure for rehabilitation

20120420_2.jpgOne of the participants, Yoko Morimoto said that she had mixed feelings about this disaster especially because she experienced The Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake when she was a student.

"My house was partially damaged, and I was one of the affected people then. Every time I see Tohoku in the news, my own experience kept flashing back. I wanted to come to Tohoku myself but I just could not."

Instead she donated trough her office to Habitat Japan. "I volunteered this time because I wanted to see how my donation was spent. I could see that Habitat Japan works in reflection to the voices of the local people. I hope this program to continue as long as it is needed. Also I wish for the completion of this community center to create an opportunity for the people to come back and restart their lives in this community. "

Habitat Japan will continue to rehabilitate the Kameoka Community Center.
