【JPN Relief-41】 Iwate : Storage Cabinets for Community

Donate to Help Japan Rebuild!

May 3rd, in addition to the rehabilitation program, Habitat Japan has started community support at Odachi temporary shelter complex, in Ofunato city. Volunteers coming from all over Japan and the local residents together are building storage cabinets.

The project answers to the residents requests that the storage spaces in the temporary shelters are limited. The cabinets are designed together with the residents, to be set under the windows or by the entrances. Using local materials they are unique to this specific project.

20120509Ofunato-9.jpgDuring the almost a week long Japanese national holiday (golden week), 34 volunteers and residents gathered to participate in this initiative. 10 storage cabinets were built in total. Had an indoor activity due to heavy rain and strong winds for a few days, the participants were able to improve their skills, and building initiative went on smoothly. One of the volunteers said "I wanted to do something for the affected people in Tohoku. I am very happy that I am involved in a project to build something that the people really need and will use."

The finished cabinets were set in place while the residents witnessed, then they stored household goods with much anticipation. One of the residents said with great relief: "It is very helpful because the storage spaces in the temporary shelters are limited. We have many things such as heater that we need to store for summer but had no place to keep at all."

At the Odachi temoporary shelter complex, more than 40 households requested the cabinets. Habitat Japan will continue to help improve the housing condition of the affected people.
