【JPN Relief-54】 Miyagi : Building Sheds for Fishermen (2)

Donate and Volunteer to Help Japan Rebuild!

20120820izushima2.jpgOn Izushima island, an outlying island near Onagawa in Miyagi prefecture, there is a fishing community devastated by the earthquake and tsunami last year. Habitat Japan began building fisherman's sheds to help their recovery. On August 12th, the very first unit was completed.

16 volunteers from Tokyo, Aichi, Hyogo, Hiroshima and other parts of Japan had gathered to work on this project. Tasks included installing the insulation, walls and ceiling, roofing and painting to finish. Also to increase utility, wooden deck and sun room at the entrance with benches in the yard were added.

The volunteers got to visit with the local residents at a cook-off event in the neighborhood. People joined from around the island and temporary housing complex near by thanked the volunteers for coming all the way just to help them out. "Don't work too hard," the locals cheered us on.

20120820izushima1.jpgThe team of volunteers stayed at the island's sentry, to be ready early morning the next day to get to work. Despite the misty rain, the team completed the roofing of the sun room as the last step of the project. At the dedication ceremony that followed, community leader Mr. Suda received a key to the shed.

"This shed is another step forward to recovery. However, this island is not an easy place to live for the young people while the school is still closed, making it hard for us to see the future. It poses a critical issue for us, " Suda shared.
