【JPN Relief-55】 Iwate : 95 House Repairs Completed

Donate and Volunteer to Help Japan Rebuild!

ofunatofunato_20121009(1).jpg House rehabilitation project in Ofnato, Iwate launched in December last year is celebrating the completion of it's 95th family returning to their house repaired by Habitat.

Toshio Kumagai, 84, added lumber himself to support the wait baring house frame which was damaged by the tsunami. The wave included all kinds of debris including a fishing boat that crushed into his house taking majority of roof tiles off the house. Toshio's son was worried for robbery and decided to stay in this house alone, but stress of living in a house with no structural integrity was unbearable. The family learned of Habitat through the brochure we've posted to inform about the project, and now the house has a new and safe roof.

ofunatofunato_20121009(2).jpgTakako Funato, 63, lives with her husband, mother-in-law, a daughter with her husband and child. All six of them now live on the upper floor of their house that also function as the office space for the family business. They used to use the first floor of the house as the office till the disaster. Not only the office, the tsunami washed the stair case to get to the upper floor, leaving the family to use make-shift ladder in replacement. It makes it very hard to carry out daily chores, and most of all, it is dangerous especially for the elderly and the young. In response, Habitat helped install the study and safe stair case (image right).

Yoshikiyo Sato, 65, have been repairing his house within his own means ever since the disaster struck. Because the interior walls on the first floor showed any sign of damage at a glance, he left it as is. However, he noticed black spots on the ceiling one day; it turned out to be mold caused by leakage through the cracks in the walls. Sato wanted to keep the house a safe place to live for the four grandsons who live with him so he came to Habitat. We helped repair the ceiling in response.
