【JPN Relief-71】Miyagi : Completion of A Community Center

Donate and Volunteer to Help Japan Rebuild!

20130411_5.JPGThe City of Natori is located to the south of Sendai, the prefecture capital of Miyagi Prefecture. Kozukahara is a one of the most devastated areas in Natori and most of houses and building were washed away. However, the locals started rebuilding their neighborhood and Habitat Japan also joins rebuilding Kozukahara by renovating a community center since September 2012.

When Habitat Japan first visited the center last summer, people had no choices then but to use the center with broken walls and floor. There was no electricity, gas and water supplies. To bring back the place where people of Kozukahara can reunite in safe and peace, Habitat Japan. renovated the center step by step with volunteers, carpenters and the locals of Kozukahara.

The work started with gutting damaged walls and floor boards, and getting rid of sludge under floor. Then new walls and floor boards were installed, and outer walls were newly coated. These main renovation works were finished last year and Habitat Japan also repaired the interior such as kitchen room and closet room. The entire renovation was completed in late March 2013, and the locals now use it for community meeting and other events for gathering.

Many Habitat volunteer joined this renovation work. A volunteer said, "I came here to volunteer and cheer up the locals but it was I that was encouraged by them," other volunteers were also said that they were pleased to see people there actively work to rebuild their community. Kozukahara community leader, Mr. Endo said, "This community center that was renovated by many volunteers our place of relief. We need a lot more time to rebuild the entire community but we can start from this place."

Habitat Japan will continue support people of Kozukahara to rebuild their community.
